Monday’s Mindset

In a recent, deeply engaging conversation with sports psychologists Dr. Brett Haskell and Kacey Oiness, I was struck by the clarity and depth of insights into what sets high achievers apart. This interview was a conversation that resonated on a profound level. It highlighted four key traits that are indispensable indicators of success: living deliberately, having grit, possessing persistence, and the need to dominate others—a natural extension of competitiveness. These traits, when balanced, lay the groundwork for exceptional achievement in sports and life.

1. Living Deliberately:

Living deliberately is about making conscious, intentional choices that reflect our core values, long-term goals, and our identity. It’s about being fully present and engaged in every aspect of life, steering away from autopilot and random behavior. This means a relentless focus on goals, intentionality in every decision we make, and daily reflection on progress.

Self-Awareness and Goal Setting: Successful athletes possess a deep understanding of their core values and what drives them. They set clear, actionable goals that are in lockstep with these values, creating a sense of purpose that drives their daily actions. This self-awareness ensures that every step taken is a deliberate stride toward their overarching objectives.

Prioritization: Mindfulness enables athletes to stay centered and focused on what truly matters. By prioritizing their time and energy, they eliminate distractions that do not serve their goals, ensuring that their efforts are always aligned with their purpose. The are masters of who and what gets their energy. They do not have energy to waste as energy, like time, is one of their most valuable assets.

2. Living With Grit:

Grit is the blend of passion and perseverance toward long-term goals. It’s about holding on to a dream through thick and thin, driven by an unwavering love, obsession, and determination for what one does.

Passion: High achievers are fueled by a profound obsession for their sport. This deeply rooted love ignites their dedication and pushes them through the toughest of times. It’s this passion that allows them to keep standing back up, even when the path is fraught with adversity and pain.

Perseverance: No matter how formidable the challenges, athletes with grit persist. They find a way to view setbacks not as failures but as lessons that propel them forward. Their perseverance is the relentless pursuit of improvement, driven by an unrelenting belief in their ultimate goal.

3. Living With Persistence:

Persistence is the resolute continuance in a course of action despite difficulty or opposition. It embodies the unwavering determination to keep moving forward, no matter the cost.

Steadfastness: Successful athletes exhibit an unyielding commitment to their goals. They remain steadfast in their training and competition plans, pushing through inevitable pain, failure, and losses with a determination that is both inspiring and unshakable.

Determination: High achievers are characterized by a fierce determination to reach their goals. This determination is not just a fleeting feeling but a deep, intrinsic resolve that drives them to remain focused and driven, regardless of the difficulties they encounter.

4. The Need to Dominate Other Humans

The need to dominate, which stems from an innate competitive nature, is a potent motivator in the realm of athletics. This trait involves a compelling desire to assert influence and control, often manifesting as an unyielding drive to outperform and lead.

Power and Control: Athletes with a need to dominate strive to influence outcomes and assert their presence in their sport. This desire for control pushes them to uphold high standards and continuously seek excellence.

Competitiveness: A natural competitive spirit drives these athletes to view every interaction and competition as an opportunity to prove themselves. This competitiveness fuels their determination to deliver their best performance consistently. They won’t stop until they are the best. They will lose sleep over every loss. They are going to bring everything that they have to every single encounter.

The Balancing of Traits for Success

The essence of high achievement lies in the delicate balance of these traits. Living deliberately instills purpose and direction. Grit and persistence ensure sustained effort and resilience in the face of challenges. The need to dominate channels competitive drive into a relentless pursuit of excellence.

Self-Reflection and Adaptability: High achievers are adept at self-reflection, constantly assessing their actions and adapting their strategies to maintain balance. They are acutely aware of their strengths and weaknesses and make conscious efforts to foster growth and improvement.

Emotional Regulation and Collaboration: Effective management of emotions and a collaborative mindset are crucial. High achievers use their influence to inspire and motivate others, creating a driven environment that forges success.

This interview was was a deeply personal revelation. High achievers are distinguished by traits that drive their success: living deliberately, having grit, being persistent, and the need to dominate. These traits, when balanced, form the foundation for exceptional achievement in sports and beyond. Understanding and cultivating these traits is a blueprint towards greatness. This conversation has not only enriched my understanding but also reinforced my belief in the power of intentional living, relentless passion, steadfast determination, and the competitive spirit. It is a testament to the human spirit's capacity to strive for and achieve greatness.

To Building Fortitude.
