The Playbook

I was working with an elite hockey player during their final collegiate season before turning pro—emotions running high, pressure mounting, performance slipping.

"I keep replaying mistakes. Overthinking what's next. I can't stay present."

Here's what we worked on:

When emotions take over, ground yourself physically. Look at your feet. Feel them in the ground. Ask: "What's the next best thing I can do?"

Not the next ten things. Not what happened three shifts ago. The next best thing. Right now.

Before each game, review your evidence. Past notes. Journals. Proof of who you've become. Your mind will tell you lies when pressure hits. The evidence doesn't.

You can't control teammates who won't buy in. You can't control the stakes. You can only control this moment, this action, this choice.

The present is the only place performance actually happens.

Try this:

Write one sentence on your wrist tape or somewhere visible: "What's the next best thing I can do?" When your mind spirals, read it. Answer it. Do it.
